Los Chachi

The Chachi are an indigenous group of Ecuador. Approximately 5000 Chachi currently inhabit the Cayapas River Basin in Northern Ecuador. According to Chachi oral tradition, the people originated in the mountains to the East, and moved into their current location along the Cayapas River in response to conquests of their land by other groups. The Chachi speak a Barbacoan language named Cayapa, belonging to the Chibcha language group.
